The a9 is the Bjorn Borg of professional grade SLR cameras. Most importantly, a metering system that will not be defeated by even the most inept of users.

Its spec sheet speaks for itself a maximum shutter speed of 1/12,000 of a second, stainless steel chassis, weather-proof construction, EV range from -1 to 18, eye start, function dials rather than wheels. The a9 (Maxxum 9, Dynax 9) goes beyond any camera made by the other big camera companies. That said, Minolta did create the greatest professional-grade film SLR camera of all time. But that doesn’t mean its highest-end cameras weren’t as good as Canon’s or Nikons. This divide widened further in the autofocus era - an era that ironically began when Minolta unveiled its Maxxum 7000. Here is one Minolta fanboy’s nominations.įor as groundbreaking a company as Minolta was, its professional-grade camera bodies never achieved the unanimously high reputation enjoyed by Nikon and Canon’s top models. But deciding which camera to use and what glass to put on it can be daunting with a product line as diverse and decades-spanning as Minolta’s. Shooting Minolta today means you carry a small torch for a fallen comrade. You likely also know that while this company produced incredible and innovative cameras and lenses, they had difficulty in shifting to digital imaging products, and in 2006 were acquired by Sony. Autofocus, shutter-priority, in-body image stabilization, the list of now-common features that were invented or successfully implemented by Minolta goes on and on. You’ve done some research and learned about the company that pioneered many of photography’s most important innovations. Head on over to Photo Rumors for more in-depth specs. If you’ve chosen Minolta, welcome to The Cause. We’ve reached out to our reps at Elite Brands, who are currently on break for the Jewish Holidays but hopefully will be able to get back to us soon. The news would be huge and photographers would buy them for sure since they’re a different niche that hasn’t been totally decimated by smartphones. Heck, it would probably make an even bigger splash than these things.

I mean, I absolutely couldn’t say no to a Minolta camera with a manual focus/aperture 50mm f1.4 lens attached. What would be absolutely amazing though is if they revived some of the old Minolta film cameras and sold them in bundles with Rokinon/Samyang glass. I can’t imagine even B&H Photo let alone Amazon finding a way to sell these when the industry has moved on quite a bit. There isn’t even a 1-inch sensor at the heart of these things! With that said, and with all the knowledge of these cameras and the history, I’m not exactly sure who would buy these point and shoots or how they’re going to market them. When I first started this website almost eight years ago, things were being done with 65x optical zooms with intelligent zoom technology coming into the fore. One point and shoot has a 35x zoom which obviously is absolutely nothing compared to today’s technology. They’re selling point and shoots–and not even premium point and shoots: think Canon Powershot technology from maybe eight years ago or so and then put Minolta’s name on it. So when Photo Rumors was tipped off to the cameras on Amazon, it made it all the more perplexing. That’s exactly the reason why this all seems just so odd right now. However, Konica Minolta is still around and they still make printers and the like. The lineup still continues to live on in many ways via the A mount and Sony has continued on with the company’s history being in their products (even in E Mount) while also helping it evolve. Sony then took over the Alpha mount (A mount) lineup and all the intellectual property for Minolta’s digital imaging division.

You see, back in the 2000’s, Sony bought Minolta. For those of you who knew and used Minolta cameras, you probably also remember they had a few digital camera models. With that said, brand new Minolta cameras are currently on sale at Amazon. But according to Photo Rumors your lack of belief in zombies is wrong! Elite Brands, the makers of both Rokinon and Samyang, has seemingly struck a sort of licensing agreement to use the name brand. One of the brands of cameras you would absolutely never think would come back from the dead is Minolta.
